Youth Day in South Africa falls on June 16. It commemorates the 1976 student uprising in Soweto, where young people protested against the Bantu Education Act and apartheid laws that oppressed black South Africans. During this demonstration, heavily armed police fired on the students, resulting in tragic loss of lives. Since 1994, National Youth Day has been observed annually to honor their sacrifice and celebrate the contribution of young people to the struggle against apartheid
